Jamaican Fried Dumplings

Prep Time: 20 mins

Cook Time: 30 mins

Total Time:  50 mins

Ingredients:

2 cups All Purpose Flour

3 tsp Baking Powder

1/2 tsp Salt

2 tbsp white Sugar

1 tbsp Butter, room temperature, softened  (Optional)

1/3 cup Milk

1/3 cup water

Oil

Directions:

In a bowl combine the Flour, Baking Powder, Salt, Sugar.
If using Butter, add it after you’ve added all of the dry ingredients.

You can use a fork, your fingers, or a pastry blender to combine it evenly with the flour. Butter adds a nice flavor to Fried Dumplings but you don’t have to use it if you prefer. Using Butter may also result in your dumplings being a little extra greasy.

Combine the milk and water and add the mixture slowly to the dry ingredients and knead until a soft dough is formed.

You don’t want your dough wet and you don’t want it too dry. Also try not to over knead or knead the dough too much as this may result in your dumplings being hard.

Allow the dough to rest for 30 mins. You can cover it with a damp cloth if you’d like.

In a skillet add enough oil to prevent dumplings from sticking to the pot. About 1 1/2 -2 cups of oil should work but you can always personalize this step if your prefer. Fried Dumplings don’t always require a lot of oil for frying, so feel free to use less oil when frying.

Turn your fire to medium-low and allow the oil to fully heat.

Separate the dough into about 6-8 equal pieces and roll into balls. If your dough is too wet or sticky, you can roll them out onto a lightly floured surface.

Place them into the oil to fry on each side until they are golden brown.

Remove the dumplings from the pot once they are done.

Allow them to drain on a wire rack and serve immediately with your favorite side.
